How to Cage Train Dogs

There are quite a few people who feel that cage training is mean and unnecessary, but it cases of most animals and owners, it is actually beneficial as it gives your dog its own space and also makes them obedient and calmer. If trained in the correct fashion, they will start defending their cage as their own home and will also make them relaxed since they would have their own space in case they feel upset.

Here are a few steps you can follow to start cage training your dog

Purchase a cage that is neither too big nor too small, so that your dog has space to move yet cannot form a place to go potty. Make the cage a relaxed area which is in a corner of a room such that your dog has his own space and yet you can keep an eye on him.

Try to get your dog to enter the cage. If he does not budge and starts whining, you can keep a treat inside the cage or leave the door of the cage open and let the dog enter it at its own time. When you see your dog entering the cage, keep a few more treats in the cage so that he starts understanding the relationship between staying in a cage and getting rewarded.

To train your dog to enter the cage, you can say the word “cage” and then gently tug on your fog’s collar and keep a treat in the cage. He will mostly go into the cage to get his treat. You can then slowly close the door but still keep giving treats and say praises like “good dog” etc so that he knows he is doing the right thing. By doing this a few times, he will start responding to the word “cage” by entering it.

Make sure that you don’t leave your dog unattended in the cage for more than a few hours at a time. During the initial periods, you can keep your dog in the cage for maximum 2-3 hours maximum. You can then start increasing it to 5-6 hours. But, make sure that you get your dog out a few times in a day so that he can go potty and exercise. Otherwise, he will tend to become lazy, aggressive and sometimes unpredictable.
