Potty Training Dogs

If you've just become the owner of a new dog, the most important question you would ask is “How do I potty train a dog?” It’s best to begin potty training at the very beginning, as soon as you get him to your house so that he only learns the good habits.

The first thing to do is to keep a constant watch on your dog’s behavior and keep a schedule of his eating time. Observing him with a schedule will give you a rough idea about the time when your dog feels like going potty since he will start whining and get restless.

Due to new surroundings, dogs get nervous and sometimes end up doing their business a couple of times in a day. So, start training your dog to do potty at an outdoor spot rather than wait for him to do his business and spoil the house. You should take your dog outside to a pr decided spot where he can do his business from then onwards. Give him time to explore the new place and sniff around. Take your dog to the same place everyday so that he gets comfortable with the environment and, when he goes potty, don’t forget to praise him.

Crates are the best training devices to start potty training a dog. Get your dog a crate that is the perfect size, but make sure that it is not so big that he ends up going potty in a corner of the crate itself. This will fail the whole purpose of potty training your dog. Being confined to the crate will help your dog learn to retain his urine and feces for longer periods of time and you will also be able to understand a pattern of his toilet schedule. Potty training should also be continued at night so that they are able to eliminate these habits as they grow.

If your dog accidently relieves himself at home, immediately show your disapproval by saying "No" or clapping your hands, and take him outside to finish his business. Do not scold, punish or reprimand your dog.

While you can potty train your dog easily, you must remember to keep be very patient and respect your dog. This will in turn result in your dog becoming a confident and obedient canine.
