How to Kennel Train a Dog

Once a dog gets accustomed to his new kennel, he starts treating it as his own little heaven. They start feeling secure in their area just like humans get habituated to their own homes.

Kennels serve as a great device for preventing dogs from learning bad habits and from any terrible situations in puppies. To start off the process of kennel training a dog, its firstly important to buy a kennel that is big enough for an adult dog to move about, stand, sit or sleep. Even if you are purchasing a kennel for your pup, you can buy a big one since they would eventually grow to become adult dogs. You can block off one end of the kennel when he is young so that he does not learn habits like relieving himself in the kennel or using the kennel’s areas to litter.

The main reason to kennel train dogs is to keep them from soiling the house and to learn basic habits. It will also help you predict the time when your dog feels like eliminating. It’s best if you keep the kennel in a room where the family members usually gather and do activities together so that he does not feel uninvolved. You can also try moving the kennel to different areas so that he gets familiar with the house and the members.

Try to leave your dog in the kennel for longer periods, but definitely with a certain amount of caution. This will teach good behavior and to stop whining every minute. If he is in his crate til a predetermined time, you can praise or reward him. These periods could start from 1 to 2 hours and later extend to 3-4 hours. However, it is best if you keep an eye on your dog in the initial days so that you can also understand his daily pattern.

You can either choose to potty train your dog or get a breeder to do the job for you. But, always remember to make sure that you housetrain your dog before letting him out of the kennel for long periods of time, you certainly don’t want him littering around the house. Try to be god to your dog and be patient with him when he commits a mistake. Do not yell or punish the dog for dirtying the house. It is best that you train him with positive reinforcements so that your dog learns the right from wrong.
