Here are a few tips to get you started on how to potty train your puppy:

1) It is important that you as a trainer keep constant watch on your puppy at all times. The best way to ensure this is to make a food schedule which will keep track of the amount of food that the puppy has consumed and at what intervals. A constant observation of the schedule will give you an approximate time of when the puppy shows restlessness to relieve itself or go potty. Since puppies do not have the endurance of an adult dog, this could happen quite a few times in a day and hence owners should keep watch of their puppy.

2) Once you recognize the signs of the puppy’s need to go potty like yelping, barking, restlessness etc, you can take him outdoors on a leash to do potty. You should take him to the same spot everyday so that he gets accustomed to the surrounding and understands that he must relieve himself here and nowhere else.

3) The most common method used for potty training is crates. The crate should be big enough to let the puppy move around but also small enough that he does not create an area in the crate to go potty. Being confined to a cage will make him learn to control his urge to go potty and also know where to go potty.

4) Once your puppy relieves himself at the right spot in the outdoors, you should reward him with a treat or through positive reinforcements like praises and happy face etc. This will show him that he has done his business in the right place and he will get rewarded for it.

5) If your puppy has the sudden urge to go potty, you can keep newspapers so that he goes potty only on those. In case he does on the floors, clean it up immediately and discourage him from continuing this habit by using words like “NO” “BAD PUPPY” or clapping your hands. This will show him that such bad behavior will not be tolerated in the house.
